BBC, WRU & Visit Wales Six Nations 360°

Atticus Digital was at the home of the Welsh Rugby Union to film 360 ̊ video for Visit Wales and BBC Wales. The Atticus team, our GoPro Hero 4 cameras, and Freedom 360 ̊ rig were all pitch side for the visit of Scotland and the second game of the 2016 RBS 6 Nations Championship at the Principality Stadium, Cardiff.

With the roof closed and both teams needing a win to kick-start their championship it was always going to be a hotly contested game with a great atmosphere. What better place for the first ever 360 ̊ video at an international rugby game?

Challenges:

One of the challenges we faced was after filming the experience. Once we looked over the film, we realised one of the cameras on the 6 camera rig had failed.

Solution:

Our creative team were able to solve this problem with clever post production techniques including compositing footage, multiple masking, and detail alterations.

Outcome:

Atticus was able to deliver a first person user experience of being up close and personal with the Welsh Rugby team, and standing at the centre pitch of one of the best rugby stadiums in the world. Within the first week of the various videos going live they had accumulated over 646,000 views. The key video pushed by the WRU on their Facebook page had accumulated over 454,000 views alone and have pushed their social media reach for that week through the roof. All of the videos deployed by have exceeded the average viewing figures for other videos by that party on their various platforms.
