One of the reasons so many companies are focusing on AR is that audiences can use their own devices to engage, negating the need for expensive VR hardware. ARKit and ARCore are both in early beta testing mode and rely on dual-lens cameras but the proportion of smartphones with these is expected to rise to 30% in 2018.
